In Sweden, two Scientologists started an exemplary Narconon drug education programme over a decade ago.
A former addict whose life was saved by the Narconon programme and a young mother concerned about the effects of drugs on her childrens’ future established the National Office for a Drug-Free Sweden. From a small office in Gothenburg, they began to deliver drug education lectures in local schools, providing students with factual information on the real dangers of drugs.
The response was immediate and gratifying. Students in school after school began to turn away from drugs on their own initiative. And in the face of escalating statistics nationwide on drug abuse, drug use decreased in classrooms where Narconon lectures were delivered. Word of the programme’s effectiveness spread rapidly and soon, educators from across the country were contacting the Drug-Free Sweden offices to request anti-drug lectures in their own schools.
The programme expanded to include a Narconon Drug Education Centre to train teams of drug education lecturers. Within six months of establishing the first Centre in Gothenburg, four new centres were active, including in Malmo and Stockholm.
Celebrities, athletes and corporations offered their support to forward the message of drug-free living. The programme expanded to 32 cities to become what is today possibly the most widespread and effective non-governmental drug education initiative in Sweden.
